Facility to categorise songs

Postby Williamting » Thu Sep 25, 2003 3:30 am

Christian,
As the number of songs in the db grows to a few thousands, it would be nice if songs can be "categorised" so that "favourites" or other categories could be listed together or filtered. The song title listing on the left panel could have an additional sortable column or a drop down combo box to select the category of song title to be displayed.

At the moment, I use a "dummy" service list with some of our favorites.

How do you folk handle this?

Yes I wanted this feature in v2.0 but ran out of time :o

I'll try to build this into the database upgrade for v3.0. I suppose it would be good if the categories could be user-definable too?

Have cast an "in favour" vote as i think this would be a good feature.

In particular it would allow the use of the database for more than songs - regular liturgy/responses could be incorporated as a separate category, as could regular notices which would then not get "lost" amongst the songs.

Look forward to it.

Christian,

Let the users define the categories. I believe you can still stick to your simple flat table for this. The only draw back is that the drop down combo box could be quite slow if the number of songs grow. But on the other hand, CPU is so fast nowadays that there may be no different in speed!

God bless.

 I agree the users are the ones using the software and they should be able to do the catagorising and so forth, cause every user is different, they may not do the same system of organizing their stuff :?

Hi,

I agree with William (although my background with Access instinctively inclines me in the direction of creating a relation between two data files).
Without knowing what you are using to develop the program it is difficult to know what options you may have.

In the short term I am using numbers to identify material other than songs since they sort ahead of the letters.

Messages have the prefix 1 - so
1 Childrens Church
1 Next Message etc.

Liturgy has the prefix 2 - so
2 Confession
2 Creed

Since the order within these numbered "categories" is alphabetic after the initial prefix if I want a particular item at the very top of the category I just add more numbers - hence

11 Important Message
sorts ahead of
1 Childrens Church

21 and 22 ahead of 2 etc.

Quite manageable.

Here is another tip which I use:

Zionworx has an an "Alternative Title" in addition to "Main Title" to songs. Therefore you may choose to prefix song using numeric as suggested by Paul to make the song "float" to the top and at the same time preserve the actual song title using the other title (alternative or main as according to your choice). Zionworx has both titles in the song list. So a song with two titles will be listed twice.

God bless,
William
