Power Point error (Thumbnail filenames are non-English)

Postby Torben » Sat Oct 04, 2003 1:15 pm

I get an error Message when I try to control Power Point through Zionworx.
First I marked Enable support for MS PP in Preferences.
I got a new section PP at the left - and a PP status panel in Display status.

But when I open a PP file I'm also getting an error message: Cannot open file C\Programs\Zionworx\Temp\Slide1.jpg

In the Slide thumbnails area there is a number of the slides - but no pictures. I can do the slide show at the screen - but can't see the thumbnails.

In the C\Programs\Zionworx\Temp folder I found that the files are called dias1, dias 2 etc.

My computer is running Windows XP Home - and Power Point 2000. Danish vesions.

What can I do?

Torben,

I've looked into this, and the problem is that your Danish version of PowerPoint 2000 is exporting the slide thumbnails using different filenames.

Instead of:

slide1.jpg
slide2.jpg
slide3.jpg

you're gettiing:

dias1.jpg
dias2.jpg
dias3.jpg

So ZionWorx is trying to load files which don't exist! This is the first time I've heard of this problem, but I suspect it will happen on other language versions of PowerPoint 2000 as well.

I'll fix this for the next version, until then does anybody else have any other ideas for Torben?

run a script that renames dias1.jpg to slide1.jpg etc as a quick workaround?

Hi Torben,

I have taken a look and I believe that there is no easy solution to this. Could you experiment this:

1. Start Zionworx
2. Open your PPT from within Zionworx
3. Close your PPT
4. Open your Window Explorer and navigate to c:\Programs\Zionworx\Temp\
5. Rename manually the dias1.jpg to slide1.jpg.
6. Open your ppt again. Can you now see your first thumbnail picture?
If you can see the first thumbnail, you may proceed to rename the rest.

The challenge here is that the above is good only if you are opening one PPT file. I believe the way ZionworX handle multiple PPT opened files is that it recreate all the jpg files for every screen of the PPT file you currently select and the file names are always the same in running numerical sequence starting with 1. This mean that if you have multiple ppt opened, the above solution is not very neat and could be very confusing.

However, if you are using only one simple ppt file every time with a couple of slides, then this solution is probably "better than nothing".

If it is possible to assign file name using perhaps some sort of environment variables, then it may be able to fix this problem. Anyone has some bright ideas?

If the above renaming of files work, perhaps you could create a simple DOS batch file with statement like rename dias1.jpg slide1.jpg, etc. Do you have any knowledge on DOS command? I could send you one if you could e-mail me.

God bless.

Post Reply Note:
Use DOS Copy command instead of Rename to avoid command failure (file slidexx.jpg may already exist).

The above has been tested by Torben to be working.

Hi Torben,

I know it has been 8 months since you asked about this, but I have a simple app here while running, will rename all files in the current directory and should fix the problem.

Get it at http://www.zionworx.org.uk/ZW2_PPT_Fix.exe.

Download the file to your ZionWorx Temp folder;
(C:\Programs Files\Zionworx\Temp\ I presume?)
And make sure it is running when PPT is started in ZW!

Feel free to post here if something doesn't work. Also, if it does work, it would be great to let us know too!

Cheers!

Hi Kuok-Tim

Great program - the ZW2PPT-fix.

I still sometimes have a problem to get ZW to display the thumbnails correct. I've tried to change the extension .JPG to .jpg (from uppercase to lowercase) and that seems to solve the problem in my setup.

Is it possible to change this in ZW2PPT_fix, or is it included in the v2.5 which seems to be released soon?
Thank you for the great work!

Greetings

Hello Soren,

Yes, unfortunately, the jpeg file names are case sensitive.

The new ZW 2.5 should fix this.

In the mean time, here is the utility with the fix:
http://www.geocities.com/ktcheek/ZW2_PPT_Fix_V2.zip

Let me know if it works or not...

Regards

Hi Kuok-Tim

Thank you for quick response and the V2.

But I can't get the ZW2_PPT_Fix_V2 to work.
When I monitor the Zionworx/temp (with Explorer) when V2 is running, nothing happens with the filenames (dias1.JPG).

With V1 running instead, the files change to "Slide1.JPG" just after load of a PPT in ZW.

In V2, when "enabled" is ticked, I can change the options ("filename beginning with"), but when "un-ticking" I can't change them. Neither option change any filename in my temp-folder... (running Win-XP, PPT 2002).

But if V2.5 can handle it, don't spend time on this now.

Regards
Soren.

Hello again.

I've tested the new V2 - and now get a box:

-----------------
Project1
-----------------
Run-time error '75'
Path/File access error
OK
------------------

The box appears when loading a PPT.

Regards
Soren.
